A backlink is a link from one website to another. It's not a complicated idea, however, backlinks are an important metric that Google uses to determine the authority of a page so it's a topic worth studying if you're interested in ranking higher in the search results.

The two types of links we'll focus on this article are do-follow links and no-follow links. Do-follow links pass authority from one website to another, almost like a vote of confidence, while no follow links are purported to not help pages rank.

Does that mean you shouldn't get no-follow backlinks? Some say no follow links do help SEO (Source: Backlinko) but either way a link will create a citation and allow a user to click through to your website and more traffic is always the goal.
